Academics: Exceptional Education
Tucson Country Day School is committed to providing eligible students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education consistent with federal and state laws. These laws require the district to identify, locate, and assess all students within the school who may have disabilities, and then provides appropriate support and/or related services to those eligible. These services are provided based on the individual needs of the student and the recommendation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team. An IEP is a legal document that describes how TCDS provides services to students with exceptional needs. Students may receive a wide variety of services, based upon their individual needs.
Students with an IEP may receive a wide variety of resource services, based upon their individual needs, including:
Specialized instruction from a certified resource teacher
Inclusionary support within the general education classroom from resource staff
One on one paraprofessional support
Specific classroom accommodations, modifications and behavioral supports
Speech and language therapy
Occupational and physical therapy
Services from our certified school psychologist
Student Study Teams
When students are experiencing learning or behavior problems which interfere with classroom success, they are referred to the Student Study Team (SST). The SST is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators and specialists, who develop a plan within the general education classroom to improve student success. When students do not make sufficient progress with a SST plan, they may be referred for a variety of evaluations to determine if they may require specialized resource room instruction or related services. All eligibility decisions are made by a Multi-disciplinary Team (MET), which includes parents and all appropriate school personnel. If students are not determined eligibility for resource services by the MET, students may also receive academic tutorial assistance through the at-risk program. At-risk tutorial services are determined by the SST and are provided by a para-professional either within the general education classroom or a separate setting in small group or on a one to one basis.
If a student has a “perceived disability” and is not eligible for resource services, he or she may qualify for a 504 Accommodation Plan if there is an impact on the major life activity of learning. 504 Accommodation Plans are meant to “level the playing field” for children with disabilities who require general education classroom accommodations, rather than direct intervention services. Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), medical conditions and psychological conditions may qualify for a 504 Accommodation Plan if their disability impacts learning within the classroom.
Please contact Kelly Everett, Director of Special Education, at TCDS (296-0883, ext. 169) if you have any questions about the Exceptional Education Program.
